Imagine a fourteen-year-old boy riding a horse-drawn plow, staring down at the dirt. Row by row, back and forth, he has plowed the soil into neat, even lines. Most kids would be daydreaming about lunch. This boy was dreaming up television.
His name was Philo Taylor Farnsworth, born in Beaver, Utah, in 1906. When he was young, his family moved to a farm near Rigby, Idaho. Up in the attic he found stacks of old science magazines and read them for hours. The farmhouse had electric wiring, and Philo could not stop wondering how it all worked.
The plowing handed him his biggest idea. If a farmer could cover a whole field one line at a time, maybe a machine could build a picture the same way, scanning it in rows so quickly that your eyes would blink and see one whole image. In the spring of 1922, he sketched the plan on the chalkboard for his chemistry teacher, Justin Tolman.
Turning that daydream into a real machine took years. Other inventors were building televisions with spinning disks, but Philo believed light could be caught by electricity alone, with no moving parts at all. He designed a special glass tube he called the image dissector, which sliced a picture into tiny electric signals.
On September 7, 1927, in a small laboratory in San Francisco, it finally worked. Philo sent a single straight line gliding across his screen and shouted, "There you are, electronic television!" He was only twenty-one years old.
Fame did not come easily. A giant company called RCA claimed one of its own scientists had invented television first. Philo fought back for years, and in 1934 the patent office ruled that the idea was truly his. Over his lifetime he earned around 300 patents.
Philo Farnsworth died in 1971, and today hardly anyone remembers the farm boy behind the screen. But every time a picture flickers to life, it still travels in rows, the very same neat lines he first saw plowed into a field.
