When the Ground Blows Up

Deep down, the rock is melting — and it's looking for a way out.

Stand on solid ground and it feels like the most unshakable thing in the world. But go down far enough, and that rock starts to melt. Deep underground, rocks slowly turn into a thick, flowing substance called magma — melted stone, hot enough to glow. And it does not want to stay put.

Magma is lighter than the solid rock around it, so it rises. Like a bubble of air pushing up through syrup, it floats upward and collects in giant underground pools called magma chambers. Slowly, quietly, the pressure builds. The mountain above has no idea what is waking up beneath it.

When magma finally pushes through cracks called vents and fissures and reaches the surface, it gets a brand-new name: lava. It's the exact same melted rock — scientists just call it magma when it's underground and lava once it breaks into the open air.

So why do some volcanoes ooze while others explode? The secret is trapped gas. If the magma is thin and runny, gases slip out easily, and lava flows out in slow, glowing rivers. Hawaii's volcanoes work this way, moving so slowly that people can often walk away.

But if the magma is thick and sticky, the gases get stuck. Pressure builds and builds until — BOOM — the gases escape all at once and the magma blasts into the sky. This is an explosive eruption. It shatters the melted rock into flying pieces called tephra. Mount St. Helens erupted like this.

An explosion like that is dangerous in more ways than one. Fiery clouds race down the slopes, and ash drifts down like powdery snow. When hot rock mixes with water, it makes rivers of mud called lahars that have buried whole towns.

Volcanoes are not rare, either. About 1,350 volcanoes around the world could still erupt, and roughly 500 have erupted in recorded history. The United States alone has around 170 — proof that the ground beneath us is far more alive, and far more restless, than it ever looks.
